the fight for equal rights
by Diane M. Dodge
Cleveland-The National Organization for Women was founded in 1966 to take action to "bring women into full participation in the mainstream of society now."
Since that time we have marched, picketed. testified, held candlelight vigils,, lobbied, defended clinics, elected women, committed acts of civil disobedience. changed laws, written new laws. laughed, chanted and cried. We fought to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, only to see it fail three states short of being ratified. We fought for and won reproductive freedom, and will not go back to the days of back-alley abortions.
We fully support and work for equal rights for women and men, whether they are gay. straight, bisexual or transgendered. We work

hard to address the issues of racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, and violence wherever these problems exist, in our homes, schools, workplaces, churches, neighborhoods, or in the media.
In April, we held actions across the state to bring attention to equal pay day and demand
equal pay for equal work, safe working conditions, flexible hours and child care. In May, we were part of a coalition of women's organizations holding a conference in Akron to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sojourner Truth's famous "Ain't la Woman?" speech.
In June, we will be marching with our lesbian sisters and others as we celebrate gay pride month. In July, we will be protesting the Promise Keepers in Columbus and educating the public about the true, anti-woman, homophobic teachings of Promise Keepers.
Later this summer or early fall we will have our state conference in Cleveland. This conference will encourage activism in the Cleveland area, through chapter development and leadership training. Our hope is to renew the Cleveland NOW chapter and build coalitions with other groups and individuals including the lesbian, gay, and transgendered communities. peace activists, animal rights groups, women's groups, domestic violence and rape prevention groups and more.
Our civil rights and individual freedoms are under attack from both the Statehouse and the White House. The only way to protect the rights we have gained and continue to secure equal rights for all people is by forming coalitions. listening to each other and working together.
NOW has been a leader in the fight for equal rights, taking a stand against sexism, racism, homophobia, violence and all other forms of discrimination. Together we can change the world.
Diane M. Dodge is president of Ohio NOW and Akron Area NOW.
